Atonement
- Starring: Joe Wright, Christopher Hampton
- A tall order, since this is the film of the novel that pushed Ian McEwen head and shoulders above Amis and Barnes - making him (for some) the UK's leading novelist. For me, always better to read the novel after seeing the film, which in this case is splendidly lavish and highly enjoyable. A highly memorable piece about what happens when someone doesn't tell the truth. Quite uncompromising thirties cut glass accents and smoking habits. A few things that didn't need explaining were over-elaborated for non-English audiences.
