Sweeney Todd

  • Director: Tim Burton
  • Year: 2008
  • Director Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands) brings gleeful gore to Sondheim's musical based on a story that first appeared in a penny dreadful in 1846. The cast (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and even Sacha Baron Cohen) glitters almost as much as Sweeney's silver cuthroats. London in the 18th century is all stylised darkness, cockroaches and menace. The instrumental music may be lush rather than edgy, but the singing is fine and there is more than enough edge in Sweeney's gruesome schlock horror despatchings. Expect Oscars.

Special mention for Jamie Campbell Bower and Jayne Wisener as the innocent (and silver tongued) young lovers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y4v2C3Hr1U
