There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood

Year: 2007

Daniel Day-Lewis is stunning in this 2hr 40min operatic epic. After an optimistic beginning it's a grim mix: the subject is oilman Plainview's self-loathing, callous wickedness and need to prove himself. The meek inherit nothing. The American pioneers and charismatic Christianity are a sham. Day-Lewis's voice and face make the film: his rich voice persuades even when he’s being so thoroughly nasty. A hugely impressive film.
